Godspell Musical Opens March 31 At Historic Owen Theatre

The Branson Regional Arts Council proudly presents the immensely successful rock opera, Godspell, at the Historic Owen Theatre from March 31 – April 10, 2022. Performances are at 7:00 pm with 2:00 pm Matinees on Sundays. This promises to be an inspiring and entertaining production for all ages!

Based on the Gospel according to St Matthew, Godspell is the story of a small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life.

Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden); and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day by Day,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs, including “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All for the Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.”

HISTORIC OWEN THEATRE TICKETS

The BRAC production is directed by Jeremiah Reeve with musical director Kyle Denton. Choreography is provided by Jacob Deck.

The cast features Christian Ross (Jesus) and Alex Harris (Judas), along with Heather Stolfa, Haley Moore-Haskin, Sonya Godfrey, Claire Denton, Jacob Deck, Kayleigh Dominish, Katy Kohler, Loran Polson, Abby Reeve and Taryn Huffman.

What to Bring: 60-90 second song in the style of the show. (Musical theatre rep only) Bring your own tracks (on your phone or player).

Clothing for Audition: You may wear dance attire to the auditions. Bring comfortable shoes you can dance in/character heels (ladies) if you have them, also if you have tap shoes, bring those as well.

Dance Requirements: Intense choreography including elements of Jazz, Tap, & Musical Theatre styles

Additional Notes: Rated Pg-13. Students in middle school/high school can audition with permission slip from parent/guardian. These will be “open auditions” – those who are waiting after dance call are welcome to sit in back of theatre and observe until they are called.

Show Synopsis:
Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz. Something Rotten features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each given his or her own special moment in the show to shine. It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” so don’t miss your chance to be a part of this history-twisting tale on the BRAC stage!

Cast Description:

  • Shakespeare – The Bard. Over the top with a huge ego.
  • Nick Bottom – A struggling writer who cannot stand Shakespeare. Nigel’s older brother.
  • Nigel Bottom – Nick’s sweet younger brother. A struggling writer who falls in love with Portia, a Puritan.
  • Bea – Nick’s wife. She loves Nick despite his past lack of success. She dresses up like a man to prove she can be an actor.
  • Portia – A Puritan woman who loves poetry, theater, and ultimately Nigel.
  • Nostradamus – A soothsayer
  • Brother Jeremiah – Portia’s father. A Puritan who thinks Nick and Nigel’s plays are sinful.
  • Lord Clapham – A posh patron of the theater.
  • Shylock – An investor to whom Nick and Nigel are in debt.

We have a full slate of amazing events this year, and are looking for enthusiastic folks who love their community, and LOVE TO HAVE FUN!

What are your areas of interest? 

GUEST SERVICES
Greet our theatre patrons as they arrive for a production. Hand out our official Playbill programs, and assist with seating locations or other needs.

CONCESSION STAND VOLUNTEERS
Assist our patrons by serving up fresh popcorn, sweet treats and beverages from our historic concession stand before the show and during intermission. Duties include cashier, product display, popcorn making, cleaning, sanitization, and inventory tracking. BRAC will assist qualified food handlers in obtaining their required ServSafe Certification at our expense.

SET CONSTRUCTION, COSTUME & PROP BUILDING
Work behind the scenes to help build stage sets, props and costumes for upcoming productions. Previous experience not required, but is certainly beneficial.

CLEANING & SANITIZING
One of our most important volunteer positions… our cleaning crews sweep and vacuum the theatre after each performance, wipe down touchable surfaces in public areas with sanitized towelettes, remove all trash to the outside dumpsters.

STREET TEAM MARKETING
Help us connect to our community and spread the great news about our upcoming events and theatrical productions! We will provide the posters or flyers, and you will help us distribute them to participating locations in and around our community

Branson Goes Under The Sea With The Little Mermaid

The Branson Regional Arts Council is excited to open the curtain on it’s 2022 Season of musical theatre this week in downtown Branson.

Directed by Jacob Deck, this family favorite musical transforms the Historic Owen Theatre into a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”

Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

Open Auditions for Godspell February 6-7

The Branson Regional Arts Council is holding open auditions for their live musical production of Godspell on February 6 and 7, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church of Branson.

When: Sunday, February 6 and Monday, February 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Where: First Presbyterian Church, 420 W. Main St., Branson, MO 65616 (Use Sanctuary entrance)

Who: Auditions are open to adults age 18+. See below for more information.

What to bring:

  • 60-second singing audition in the musical style of the show (our production is of the 2012 revised version).
  • Bring your own tracks on your phone or player.
  • Printed headshot (if you have one)
  • Acting resume (if you have one)
  • Be prepared to list all known conflict between Feb. 13 and April 10.

Acting: Following individual singing auditions, you will be invited to perform cold readings from the script.

Choreography: The show will have staged movement and choreography but there is no dance call at auditions. Feel free to show you can move during your singing auditions.

There will be eight (8) performances of Godspell from March 31-April 10 at the Historic Owen Theatre. The rehearsal schedule will be discussed during each audition time. There is a possibility of casting for swings or double casting for health and scheduling reasons. This is a community theatre production and actors are not paid to participate, as is standard with all BRAC productions.

Casting
While traditionally cast as 5 males and 5 females, the majority of characters are not tied to any gender, ethnicity, or age. Actors are generally referred to by their own names – the names used below are those from the 2012 revised version.

Character Breakdown

Jesus
Must be the most charismatic individual in the cast. High energy, charming, funny, gentle but with strength. He is the sort of person others instinctively follow.

John The Baptist/Judas
He has attributes of both Biblical figures: He is both Jesus’ lieutenant and most ardent disciple and the doubter who begins to question and rebel. Like Jesus, he is also charismatic, but in more of an overt revolutionary way. He is the most “serious” and intellectual of the group, though as with all the actors, he must still possess a good sense of physical comedy.

Nick
Very high energy. Impish and playful. In the original, he played several musical instruments, including concertina, recorder and guitar.

Telly
Not the brightest in the bunch, he is a little slow on the uptake. But there is a great sweetness and innocence about him. Because he sings “All Good Gifts” he must be a very good singer.

George
The comedian, the class clown. The guy who can do a hundred voices and imitations.

Anna Maria
A bit of a tomboy, but basically open and sweet. Perhaps the youngest of the group. She is the first of the group to commit to following Jesus in the song “Day by Day.”

Lindsay
The confident one, the show-off. The first one to volunteer, sometimes she jumps in before she really understands what’s going on.

Uzo
The shy one. Sometimes a little slow to get things, but when she does, she commits all the way. Has an “earth mother” kind of warmth to her.

Morgan
Sassy and slightly cynical, the most urban of the group. Also the “sexy” one, but her sexiness contains a large element of put-on, in the manner of Mae West or Madonna (who in fact once played this role.)

Celisse
The female equivalent of the class clown. Goofy and a cut-up. In the 2012 Broadway revival, she played several instruments, including conga, ukulele and guitar.

Seeking Area Artists To Go Under The Sea

The Branson Regional Arts Council is seeking area Artists to submit works for the upcoming “Under The Sea” Art Exhibition and Sale at the Rock Room Gallery inside the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson.

This will be a three-week exhibit from February 10-27, 2022 coinciding with the BRAC musical stage production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, with an anticipated audience of over 2,000 patrons.

Interested artists should prepare new works or submit old works for consideration that relate to the theme in some manner.  It does not have to be Disney style animation (but it can be) or specifically relate to the musical; just present an imaginative way of showing life “under the sea.”

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: All submissions must be received no later than Friday, February 4th, with all selected artwork delivered to the Historic Owen Theatre no later than Saturday, February 5, 2022 to participate in this show.

There is no submission fee, but all selected Artists must have an active, annual BRAC Membership (starting at $20/year). Displayed artwork will be available for purchase by the general public with a small percentage of any sold items going to benefit the Arts Council. More details will be provided upon selection.

Exciting Lecture For Artists At Historic Owen Theatre

The Branson Regional Arts Council presents an exciting and informative speaker, Raine Clotfelter, also known as America’s Muralist. On Friday, January 28th at 6pm in the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson,

A $5 donation at the door will benefit the Arts Council. While this event is particularly geared towards working artists,  everyone is invited to attend.

Card carrying BRAC Members will be admitted free of charge (show card at the box office). Annual BRAC Memberships may be purchased online at BransonArts.org/membership.

RESERVE YOUR LECTURE SEAT

Raine will be speaking on topics such as: building an art business, how to price your artwork, working as a team, Art business etiquette, what products to use, as well as tips and tricks of the trade.

There will also be a digital presentation of Raines murals followed by a question and answer period.

Raine is a professional Artist/Illustrator seeking to revitalize and enrich our nation’s most valued resources; its citizens and communities, by capturing in his artwork and murals, the unique individuals and historical events that made this country what it is today. Raine’s artwork has been published in several military publications such as Link, Surface Warfare, and Navy News. He has historical pieces displayed on Naval ships, various military commands, recruiting and reserve centers across the country, including the White House in Washington, DC. He has been classified as a Naval Historian for his works on Naval history.

Raine joined the Navy in 1983. He was first stationed in Norfolk, VA where he served on board the USS Newport LST-1179, the USS Shenandoah AD-44, and on SURFLANT’s Admiral Staff. In 1988 Raine continued his career in the Navy by joining the Navy Reserves.

The Navy was very careful in selecting DMs. In 1984 only 15 DM billets were available to fill out of 21 qualified applicants in the entire Navy. Raine was selected first across the board. In the 1980’s there were over 400 DMs in the Navy and upon his retirement in 2004 there were only 46. Historically; Raine was the Navy’s last reservist DM when he retired in April 2004.

In January 2003, Raine was recalled to active duty, where he served on the front lines in Iraq for Naval Security in the Middle East. Even though his main line of duty was physical security to protect the Middle East U.S. Central Command and the airstrip in Bahrain, he was the only Navy DM there. Therefore, during this time Raine created artwork and technical illustrations to support the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS) and other attached command’s.

In regard to Raine’s professional illustrations, he was chosen to serve on three separate admiral staffs during his Naval career. He served as ISO for Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom in Iraq. Before retiring from his Naval career he received four US Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation medal (among other service awards for his intelligence work (technical illustrations) he produced in response to the September 11th terrorist attacks), two Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation medals, Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation medal, four Armed Forces Service medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary medal, three Battle “E”s, and was awarded nine other medals. REDCOM photographed Raine’s artwork at the Broken Arrow Naval Reserve Center to classify his art as preserved Naval history and designated Raine as a “Navy Historian Artist”.

As a staff artist for Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Raine also illustrated artwork for Walt Disney Productions, Gulf Western, TIME, Warner Bros., Tri-Star Entertainment, Branson Teleproductions, and Percussion Entertainment. In the music publishing realm he designed many folio’s and sheet music covers for entertainers such as Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams Jr., Clint Black, as well as others. Beyond the entertainment industry, he has produced artwork for corporations such as JC Penney, Radio Shack, Comp USA, Boeing, McDonald Douglas, Texas Instruments, Raytheon, Bass Pro and others. Most recently he has done several large historic murals for businesses, cities and towns across the US and at various museums such as the

World’s Largest Toy Museum, The Harold Bell Wright Museum, the American Presidential Museum, the Branson Auto & Farm Museum, Celebrity Car Museum in Branson, MO, as well as O’Fallon Historical Museum in Baker, MT, and the VanHorn Historical Museum in ND.

To present date, Raine has worked on over 170 detailed, hand-painted murals and gallery pieces. Some of his murals of American history are as large as sixty-feet high and with lengths of three hundred-feet long.

Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.
There will be seventeen (17) public performances of The Little Mermaid over a three-week period of time in February. This will be the first of eight (8) mainstage productions at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson in the 2022 season.

Godspell

Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden); and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day by Day,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs, including “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All for the Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.”

A small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life.

Little Women – The Musical

Produced nationally and internationally, Little Women has been praised by critics for its ambition in adapting such a well-known story for the stage. This timeless, captivating story is brought to life in this glorious musical filled with personal discovery, heartache, hope and everlasting love. The original production starred the unparalleled Sutton Foster, who received Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations for her performance.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested – her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her that she has to do better and write more from herself. Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.

Beauty and the Beast Jr (BRAC’s Summer Youth Institute)

Based on the original Broadway production that ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. is a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. features some of the most popular songs ever written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice.

The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. Something Rotten – A Very New Musical

The Branson Regional Arts Council presents a hilarious Halloween weekend production!

The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages, this much-revived classic from the playwright of Private Lives offers up fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, re-married but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira who is called up by a visiting “happy medium,” one Madame Arcati. As the (worldly and un-) personalities clash, Charles’ current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed, “passes over,” joins Elvira, and the two “blithe spirits” haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.

Frozen Jr (BRAC’s Winter Youth Institute)

Frozen JR. is based on the 2018 Broadway musical, and brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life, onstage. The Sound of Music Opens At Historic Owen Theatre

The Ozark Hills are alive with The Sound Of Music as the Rogers and Hammerstein classic comes to the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson for ten performances from December 2-12, 2021.

“After having to postpone this show last season, we are thrilled to finally bring this incredible family production to the stage of the Historic Owen Theatre,” says BRAC Executive Director Jim Barber. “We appreciate the support of our fantastic patrons for their patience, and we know you and your entire family will have a great time together at this holiday production,” he added.

Based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, this play captures a personal tale of growth and hope amidst the horrors of World War II. The Sound of Music tells the tale of young postulant Maria Rainer, whose free spirit has trouble fitting into the rules and regulations of Nonnberg Abbey. Commissioned by the Mother Abbess to serve as the governess for seven motherless children, Maria transforms the Von Trapp family home from a place of dour rules and regulations to one filled with joy, with laughter, and with music. In the process, Maria wins the hearts of all seven children–and their widower father, Captain Von Trapp.

With the Mother Abbess’ blessing, and to the children’s delight, Maria follows her heart, and Maria and the Captain marry. Upon returning home from their honeymoon, Maria and the Captain learn that their beloved Austria has been taken over by the Nazis, and the retired Captain is asked to report for immediate service in the Nazi Navy.

When the Nazis show up at their door to take Captain Von Trapp away, it is a family singing engagement (wily navigated by their friend Max) that buys the family time to make their narrow escape. Their Austrian convictions compel Maria, the Captain, and the children to flee over the mountains of Switzerland to safety, taking the words of the Mother Abbess to heart: “Climb Every Mountain… till you find your dream.”

The Branson Regional Arts Council production of The Sound of Music is under the direction of Jacob Deck who also serves as choreographer and set designer for the musical.

4th Annual Staccato Show Choir Winter Holiday Showcase Concert

Branson area residents are invited to enjoy a special, one-of-a-kind Holiday Showcase Christmas Concert featuring the young talented members of the Branson Regional Arts Council’s Staccato Show Choir.

The 4th Annual Winter concert will take place on Monday, December 6, 2021 at 7:30pm at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson. All seats are $10 and proceeds benefit the BRAC Youth Education Fund, which provides performing opportunities for area youth between the ages of 8 and 18.

Staccato Show Choir is an energetic advanced musical group that combines a challenging music repertoire with entertaining choreography. The choir focuses on elevating and applying its formal training into lively, breath taking “show” style performances. Students meet at the Historic Owen Theatre and study advanced music theory, vocal warm up, stage etiquette, presence and showmanship, as well as multi-part choral music.

The choir is directed by Jacob Estes, with vocal direction by Delyla Uebel.
