Auditions for BRAC’s Winter Youth Production of Finding Nemo JR Announced

Auditions for the Branson Regional Arts Council’s production of Disney’s Finding Nemo JR. will be held Sunday, September 10, 2023 at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson beginning at 4:45pm.

We are looking for cast members ages 8 to 18!

Please plan to be in attendance for the duration of the dance call audition 4:45-5:45pm. For the dance audition please come dressed accordingly. You may bring clothes to change into for your vocal audition. Wear/bring appropriate clothing and footwear you are comfortable moving in.

Vocal auditions will take place following the dance call. Auditionees will be seen in age order (beginning with younger performers). Performers will be released after they have sung. Prepare a 60 second cut of a musical theatre or Disney song that shows off your range and acting skills. An accompanist will NOT be provided. Please bring an MP3 or Youtube karaoke track. Please NO ACAPELLA auditions.

You must attend the dance call AND stay for an individual vocal audition.

Disney’s Finding Nemo JR. is a 60-minute musical adaptation of the beloved 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo, with new music by award-winning songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.

Featuring memorable songs such as “Just Keep Swimming,” “Fish Are Friends Not Food,” and “Go With the Flow,” Finding Nemo JR. brings a vibrant underwater world to life on stage in a story full of family, friendship, and adventure.

Callbacks will be Tuesday, September 12th – 6:00-8:30pm (You will be notified if you are needed at the callback audition)

The cast list will be posted Wednesday, September 13th on Branson Regional Arts Council social media and you will be contacted via email.

There will be a mandatory parent meeting Thursday September 14th, 5:15-5:45pm.

(10) public performances will occur on Nov 30th, Dec 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9 & 10.
Thursdays and Fridays (7pm), Saturdays (2pm & 7pm), and Sundays (2pm).
Performers must be available for ALL performance dates.

Stage Adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream Presented At Historic Owen Theatre

The Branson Regional Arts Council’s 2023 Theatre Season continues with William Shakespeare’s classic play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as adapted for the stage by Josh Boulden.

Four public performances are scheduled at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson on Thursday, September 7th (7pm), Sunday, September 10th (2pm), Thursday, September 14th (7pm), and Sunday, September 17th (2pm).

Advance Reserved Tickets are recommended and available online at BransonArts.org/tix or by calling the Historic Owen Theatre Box Office at 417-336-4255. $20 Adults (18+), $12 Youth (4-17).

Attention Area Schools: A special matinee performance is being  planned for Monday, September 11th  at 11:00am for area public, private and home schools to attend. This will include an educational aspect where the students will have an opportunity to learn more about Shakespeare and this production. Interested teachers or education leaders should contact BRAC for further information at edu@bransonarts.org or 417-336-4255.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare in about 1595 or 1596. The BRAC production, as adapted by Josh Boulden, is set in Athens, and consists of several subplots that revolve around the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. One subplot involves a conflict among four Athenian lovers. Another follows a group of six amateur actors rehearsing the play which they are to perform before the wedding. Both groups find themselves in a forest inhabited by fairies who manipulate the humans and are engaged in their own domestic intrigue. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and is widely performed.

The production is under the direction of Josh Boulden, and cast members include: Megan King (Hermia), Jon Michael Thompson (Lysander), Josie Holman (Helena), Seth Coker (Demetrius), Cody Croxford (Oberon/Theseus), Olyvia Shaw (Titania/Hippolyta), Sara Boehm (Robin Goodfellow/Philostrate), Mariah K. Garrett (Nick Bottom),  Jackie Zliczewski (Peter Quince), Brandon Farrar (Francis Flute/Egeus), Natalie Hensarling (Tom Snout), Kahrie Stegman (Snug), and CJ McElhiney (Robin Starveling).

Josh Boulden – Director

“This specific adaptation will tell the classic story of crossed lovers, magical fairies, and fantastical transformation we’ve grown to love. But this version will bring the play to life utilizing the powers of not only the text, but of music, movement, and mask. I wanted to tell this story with minimal costumes, props, and sets to bring greater attention to the actors themselves as they double roles, play instruments, and translate the story through movement. It is the desire of the cast and crew for the audience to understand the poetic text Shakespeare penned so long ago. Combining a tribute to classical traveling theatre with modern theatrical devices every element of this production has been designed to whimsically take the audience on a journey of magical romance and comical mayhem.” – Josh Boulden – Director

Josh Boulden is a professional actor, acting coach, and fight choreographer from Annapolis, MD. He trained at the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy at The George Washington University in D.C. where he spent an intense year immersed in classical acting and Shakespeare’s text. He’s been in the theatre industry for over 10 years, has performed in a dozen works of Shakespeare, and is blessed to be in his seventh season as an actor at Sight & Sound Theatres in Branson. Before that he spent some time acting and teaching for the Annapolis Shakespeare Company, and currently teaches and directs for the Institute for Cultural Communicators. You may have seen him in a past Branson Regional Arts Council production such as Blithe Spirit, The Glass Menagerie, and all of the Shakespeare in the Parks, and you will currently see him serving in the roles of board member and director for this fall’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Monday, August 28, 2023, is Horror Night at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson!

Double Header!!

House on Haunted Hill is a 1959 American horror film produced and directed by William Castle, written by Robb White and starring Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshal, Carolyn Craig and Elisha Cook Jr. Price plays an eccentric millionaire, Frederick Loren, who, along with his wife Annabelle, has invited five people to the house for a “haunted house” party. Whoever stays in the house for one night will earn $10,000. As the night progresses, the guests are trapped within the house with an assortment of terrors.

Dead Men Walk is a 1943 American horror film produced by Sigmund Neufeld for Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC). It is an original story and screenplay by Fred Myton, starring George Zucco, Mary Carlisle, Nedrick Young, and Dwight Frye, directed by Sam Newfield. The story involves a kindly small-town physician Doctor Lloyd Clayton, who has secretly murdered his twin brother Elwyn, because of Elwyn’s deep involvement in evil practices. Only Elwyn’s hunchback assistant Zolarr suspects the good doctor of doing away with his master and confronts him, but the doctor maintains that he only acted in self-defense when his brother had become a danger to society.

Monday, August 21, 2023, is Science Fiction Night at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson!

Double Header!!

The Hitch-Hiker is a 1953 American film noir thriller co-written and directed by Ida Lupino, starring Edmond O’Brien, William Talman and Frank Lovejoy, about two friends taken hostage by a hitchhiker during an automobile trip to Mexico. The Hitch-Hiker was the first American mainstream film noir directed by a woman. It was selected in 1998 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” The film was a fictionalized version of the Billy Cook murder spree.

The Lady Vanishes is a 1938 British mystery thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave.  Written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder, based on the 1936 novel The Wheel Spins by Ethel Lina White,  the film is about a beautiful English tourist traveling by train in continental Europe who discovers that her elderly travel companion seems to have disappeared from the train. After her fellow passengers deny ever having seen the elderly lady, the young woman is helped by a young musicologist, the two proceeding to search the train for clues to the old lady’s disappearance.

This coming Monday, August 14, 2023, is Romantic Comedy Night at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson!

My Man Godfrey is a 1936 American screwball comedy film directed by Gregory La Cava and starring William Powell and Carole Lombard, who had been briefly married years before appearing together in the film.  The screenplay for My Man Godfrey was written by Morrie Ryskind, with uncredited contributions by La Cava, based on 1101 Park Avenue, a short novel by Eric S. Hatch. The story concerns a socialite who hires a derelict to be her family’s butler, and then falls in love with him.

Staccato Performance Troupe Auditions For 2023-2024 Season Scheduled

The Branson Regional Arts Council is holding auditions for new students to participate in the 2023-2024 Staccato Performance Troupe on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 9am. Auditions will be held at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson. No pre-registration required, just show up prepared to audition!

We are looking for students between the ages of 13-18 who have a passion for performing and building their skills.

BRAC’s Staccato Audition Info:

  • Saturday, August 19, 2023, 9 am – 12 pm (be prepared to stay the entire time)
  • Historic Owen Theatre (205 S Commercial St, Branson, MO 65616)
  • Class Schedule: Saturdays 9:00am-12:00pm (rehearsal times may be adjusted to work best with the troupe)
  • 1st Semester Dates: Saturdays, Sept 26 – November 11, 2023. 2nd Semester Dates: Saturdays, Jan 6 – March 30, 2024

  • VOCAL & PHYSICAL WARM UPS
  • MUSICAL THEATRE VOCAL TECHNIQUES (belting, mixing, telling a story)
  • STAGE ETIQUETTE
  • HIP HOP – JAZZ – MUSICAL THEATRE DANCE

Staccato Audition Information:

Please have two contrasting songs, one minute in length, each in the style of a musical theatre / pop song. (You will  most likely only be asked to sing one, but have two just in case we need to hear more).

  • Submission songs must be no longer than 60 seconds.
  • Please, NO a cappella singing
  • Bring an MP3 instrument track (on Bluetooth phone or ipad type device, we provide speaker)
  • Please be prepared to dance (arrive in dance-wear for the entirety of the audition)

Fall Semester for Crescendo Youth Performance Troupe Announced

Calling All Kids Ages 7-12!!! Come audition to be a part of Crescendo /krəˈSHenˌdō/!

The Branson Regional Arts Council is gearing up for the return of an exciting educational youth performance troupe featuring children who love to sing, dance and act!

BRAC’s Crescendo Audition Info:

  • AUDITION: Monday, August 14, 2023 from 4:30pm – 6:00pm
  • Historic Owen Theatre (205 S Commercial St, Branson, MO 65616)
  • Class Schedule: Mondays, 4:30pm – 6:00pm
  • Class Dates: August 21 – November 13, 2023

     

    Members of Crescendo will meet on a regular basis (see class schedule below) and will be presenting two public showcase performances at the Historic Owen Theatre, November 17-18, 2023.

    Crescendo: “Meaning growing, as in swelling of sound, or becoming louder.”

    Students will have fun developing their performance skills in the areas of voice and dance, while gaining new friendships, skills and increasing their confidence.

    The students will learn and perform under the direction of their talented and qualified instructors Jacob Deck and Julie Brinkman.

    Additional Audition Notes:

    Those auditioning will be asked to sing a cut from a song of their choice, no longer than a minute. Karaoke or mp3 track preferred, but a cappella is also welcome.
    There will also be a short movement call at the end of the singing portion of the audition. Everyone is encouraged to wear clothes that they can move in. Jazz shoes or tennis shoes preferred.

    Final Week To Laffalot With Spamalot – Historic Owen Theatre

    The Branson Regional Arts Council presents a comedy musical, lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail.     This coming Monday, August 7, 2023, is Western Night at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson!

    Double Feature!!

    Under Western Stars is a 1938 American Western film directed by Joseph Kane and starring Roy Rogers, Smiley Burnette, Carol Hughes, and the Maple City Four. Written by Dorrell McGowan, Stuart E. McGowan, and Betty Burbridge, the film is about a populist singing cowboy who decides to run for Congress in order to seek federal assistance to help small ranchers regain their water rights during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. His campaign comes into conflict with greedy water company executives.

    Utahis a 1945 American Western film directed by John English and starring Roy Rogers. Misunderstanding what her ranch is worth, Dorothy Bryant sells the land for far less than its value, so it is up to Roy to somehow get it back.

    This coming Monday, July 31st, experience the 1937 Film A Star Is Born at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson!

    A Star Is Born is a 1937 American Technicolor drama film produced by David O. Selznick, directed by William A. Wellman from a script by Wellman, Robert Carson, Dorothy Parker, and Alan Campbell, and starring Janet Gaynor (in her only Technicolor film) as an aspiring Hollywood actress, and Fredric March (in his Technicolor debut) as a fading movie star who helps launch her career. The supporting cast features Adolphe Menjou, May Robson, Andy Devine, Lionel Stander, and Owen Moore.

    We are rolling back the price of admission to 1936, just 50 cents a seat for opening night on July 31st!

    The Branson Regional Arts Council presents a comedy musical, lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Monty Python’s Spamalot retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, and French people.

    The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs. The outrageous, uproarious, and gloriously entertaining story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake will delight audiences as they search for the Holy Grail and “[fac_icon icon=”music”] always look on the bright side of life.     REVIEW: Monty Python’s Spamalot bears the warning “irreverent adult content”. Here’s the good news: the irreverence is based on equality: the ridicule reaches out to all people and institutions on an equal basis, so no one can take particular offense. The show makes fun of Royals, the English, the Finns, the French, Gays and Jews, and yes; there is a poke at Christians, too. It takes shots at ancient legends, traditions, religion, Las Vegas and Broadway. There is no respect shown for anything or anyone, and I have never heard so much laughter in a theatre!
