Steel Magnolias At The Historic Owen Theatre

The Branson Regional Arts Council launches their 7th theatrical production of the year, as Steel Magnolias opens August 29th at the Historic Owen Theatre.

The Owen stage has transformed into Truvy’s Beauty Salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Filled with hilarious repartee, the play moves toward tragedy when the spunky Shelby (a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.Playwright, Robert Harling, had one reason for crafting this beautiful story.  He wanted to preserve the memory of his real-life sister.  Little did he know that her life would go on to inspire one of the most beautiful, heartwarming tributes ever to grace the stage and silver screen. 

The production is under the Direction of Lloyd Alexander-Holt who said, “I hope that as you experience this story on stage, you are reminded of the Steel Magnolias in your life. Those strong, yet loving individuals who have helped you become who you are today.”

Auditions for the Branson Regional Arts Council‘s production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers will be held at the Historic Owen Theatre on Sunday, August 18 & Monday, August 19 (2019) from 8:00-10:00 p.m. Call backs will be held on Tuesday, August 20, from 8:00-10:00 p.m.

Performance dates are:

  • Friday, November 1, 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 2, 2:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, November 3, 2:00 p.m.

Rehearsals will be held at the Historic Owen Theatre from 6:00-10:00 p.m., Sunday-Thursday.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Please prepare a 1-2 minute vocal selection that showcases your strengths. All vocal selections must be from standard musical theatre repertoire. NO POP, ROCK, COUNTRY OR GOSPEL.
Please DO NOT perform any songs from the show.
Please bring sheet music, marked and cut, in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. Participants may also use an accompaniment track. If using a track, please provide a digital device such as a phone or iPad. NO CD’s.

All participants will be required to attend the dance call. Please bring appropriate clothing that fits closely to the body to showcase your physique. NO BAGGY CLOTHES. Appropriate footwear is required. Ladies are required to wear high heel character shoes and men are required to wear closed toed shoes; jazz shoes preferred. NO SANDALS or BARE FEET ALLOWED.

Arts Council Youth Show Choir Auditions Announced

Auditions for the Branson Arts Council’s 2019-2020 Staccato Youth Show Choir will be held Tuesday, August 13 and Wednesday, August 14. 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Historic Owen Theatre, 205 S. Commercial St., Branson, MO 65616.

For students ages 10-18. Tuition and schedule information will be provided at the audition.

Please have ready a 1 minute Broadway-style song (bring your own track). A monologue is optional.

 

Last season’s 2018-2019 Staccato group (from youngest to oldest) included; Hallie Groff (9), Jake Musser (13), Sydney Pride (13), Megan Rodgers (13), Jordan Kendrick (15), Noah Beyer (15), Moritz Mund (16), Jacob Deeter (16), Alex Knudsen (16), Carter Hendrickson (16), Dani Groff (18) and Brenna Kellem (18).

Shakespeare’s Hamlet Rocks Hollister Missouri

Shakespeare’s Hamlet Will Rock Hollister This Weekend

“To Be Or Not To Be” at Hollister’s Chad A Fuqua Park this weekend.  “That Is The Question!”

Forte Theatre Productions LLC, in cooperation with the Branson Regional Arts Council and the City of Hollister, present, Shakespeare’s Hamlet. 

This unforgettable Shakespeare in the Park event tells the story of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, who finds out that is father was secretly murdered and plots to avenge his father’s death.  It is the most quoted piece of Shakespeare’s collection of plays and has impacted popular story lines such as The Lion King.

Under the direction of Justin Ables, Hamlet is set in the 1990s and uses an original rock underscore written by local musician, Chris Skillern.  Skillern also portrays King Claudius in Hamlet where he plays live rock guitar as his character.  Josh Boulden, who plays Hamlet, paints temporary murals in selected scenes to help progress the story line.  “Shakespearean grunge meets visual art destruction” says Skillern, “You have never seen Shakespeare rock like this.”

Along with original music and performance art, Hamlet incorporates dancing in this production. “The choreography is dark, mellow and edgy. Definitely in line with the twisted story,’ says choreographer, Cori Briggs, “I tried to play up the turmoil, anger and confusion in the movement.”

This is the 3rd annual Shakespeare in the Park at Chad A. Fuqua Memorial Park located in Hollister Missouri.  As a city park improvement, Hollister has newly installed lighting and audio system in the park’s performance pavilion. Hamlet will be the first to fully utilize the new equipment.

Youth Summer Dance Fundamentals Classes

The Branson Regional Arts Council Youth Education Department is excited to offer a FOUR WEEK SUMMER DANCE FUNDAMENTALS CLASS for kids ages 8-18!

Join us every Friday from July 26th-August 16th for a fun filled, non-intimidating dance class. Through this four week course, Beginner-Intermediate Dancers will learn and explore the details to dance basics and the technique behind it all.

Meet the Instructor: Kristen Dasto
A six year Rockette Summer Intensive alumni, originally from Southaven, Mississippi, Kristen began dancing at the young age of two years old and hasn’t stopped! She moved to New York in October of 2015 to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) where she trained with industry professionals in dance, voice, and acting. After her first year, Kristen transferred to begin her training at Broadway Dance Center (BDC) in their Training Program where she graduated with a Certificate of Completion in April, 2017. Shortly after graduating from BDC, Kristen received her a certification in Classical Pilates through PowerPilates. When she is not performing, she continues her own training in dance, voice, and acting as she knows always more to learn and room to grow in the arts industry. Kristen loves helping others learn the essentials that she has learned and watching them grow to become the best they can possibly be.

Arts Council Welcomes New Vocal Instructors

BRAC Executive Director Jim Barber (center), welcomes Roger and Karen Bergford to the Historic Owen Theatre in Branson.

The Branson Regional Arts Council is proud to announce that Roger and Karen Bergford have begun accepting new vocal students as part of BRAC’s Conservatory of the Arts program at the Historic Owen Theatre. Offering both private and group vocal lessons, the Bergfords provide an impressive history of professional training and performance experience to new and advanced vocal students in the Branson area.

BRAC Vocal Instructors Roger & Karen Bergford

The Bergfords are now scheduling voice lessons for students of all ages in various styles from classical to musical theater, pop, jazz, gospel, and country. Classes are available in 30 or 60 minutes sessions, and are typically private, or as a group of 3 students together. Interested parents or students should contact the Branson Regional Arts Council at 417-336-4255 or info@bransonarts.org for more information of class scheduling and tuition rates.

Roger and Karen have over 30 years experience teaching both private and group vocal lessons. Roger earned his Bachelor of Music Education – Vocal Specialist from the University of Missouri in Kansas City, as well as graduate work in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado – Boulder.  Karen graduated with high honors from the University of Colorado – Boulder to earn her Bachelor of Music Education. Together they co-authored an industry book titled, “Sound & Language, the Defining Elements of the Complete Singer” in 2007.

After retiring as public school music educators in Colorado, the Bergfords moved to Branson in 2008 and began teaching 26 frontline singers in the Hughes Brothers “it” show, which won the Branson Show Award for “Best Show of the Year” (2009-2012).  In addition to working with the Hughes family, the Bergfords have also taught singers from The Haygoods and Jim Stafford Show casts, a backup singer with Andy Williams, and Voices of Glory, the top 5 finalists of America’s Got Talent (2009) who worked with the Michael Jackson/Boyz II Men manager, Qadree El-Amin. In 2017, the Voices of Glory were named “Vocal Group of the Year,” receiving both the prestigious Terry Award and the Branson Show Award.  Eighteen-year-old Nadia was  named “Female Vocalist of the Year.” The Bergfords were even invited to host a master class on a Bahamas cruise alongside Michael Jackson’s voice teacher in 2012.

The Arts Council is excited to have the Bergfords join the BRAC Education faculty, and they are now accepting private vocal students from the Branson Tri-Lakes area who wish to train under their professional direction.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Historic Owen Theatre

How do you spell HILARIOUS? Branson area audiences will soon find out as the Branson Regional Arts Council’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee hits the stage of the Historic Owen Theatre July 18-21.

HISTORIC OWEN THEATRE TICKETS

This version of the original Broadway musical introduces an eclectic group of six awkward spelling champions who learn that winning (and losing) isn’t everything. The students vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime, while candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives. The tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.

Taneycomo Festival Orchestra at Historic Owen Theatre June 20th

The Taneycomo Festival Orchestra is presenting a FREE community concert on Thursday June 20, 2019 at 7:30pm at the Historic Owen Theatre, 205 S. Commercial St., Branson, MO 65616. This entertaining production features a new wind ensemble, Taneycomo Harmoniemusik.

As there is no admission charge for this event, and seating will be first come, first served. The doors to the theatre will be open by 7:00pm. The theatre concession stand will be available for patrons wishing to purchase fresh popcorn, cold drinks, or other refreshments to enjoy during the concert.

The Branson Regional Arts Council is one of several community partners assisting TFO by providing performance space for the 2019 Concert Season, which starts on June 16 and runs through June 29. This is the eighth year that Larkin Sanders (TFO founder) has presented the music festival here in the Branson area.

This time, the class will be held on the deck of Vino Cellars, and the participants will be painting the incredible view of Table Rock Lake as seen in the painting above. As usual, the class will be led by professional artist and teacher, Kelly Wren.

My Clothing and Design degree from the University of Missouri led to an exciting career in the fashion industry throughout the country. When family brought me back to my roots in Missouri, I went back to school for my Masters in Education. I then taught high school art and adult classes in my hometown of Nevada, Missouri. As a member of the art communities of both Nevada and later Stockton, I developed art shows, classes, city murals, and workshops. First BRAC BBQ FEST A Tasty Success!

Hundreds of area residents gathered at Liberty Plaza in Downtown Branson this past Saturday (June 1st) to enjoy a fun-filled day of art, entertainment and some of the tastiest barbecue ever to be served out of a firetruck!

The purpose of the entire event, was to raise funds to assist the Branson Regional Arts Council (BRAC) to eventually obtain full ownership of the Historic Owen Theatre, built in 1936, and now the official home of the Arts Council and it’s community theatre and Youth Arts Conservatory program. In January 2018, BRAC acquired the venue through a long-term lease with an option to purchase. Since that time, they have presented over a dozen broadway musicals and plays for the community, and also founded a Youth Arts Education Program with emphasis on young students from all across the area who are between the ages of 8 and 18.

“The first annual BRAC BBQ FEST was a big success, especially when you consider how fast our incredible team of volunteers pulled it together,” said Branson Regional Arts Council Executive Director Jim Barber. “We were able to raise $13,000 after expenses, thanks to the generosity of our event sponsors, Dr. Tallon and Branson Dental Center (Premiere Sponsor), Dr. Munshi and the Branson Institute of Sleep (Backstage Sponsor), Mercy Hospitals (Backstage Sponsor), Chic-fil-A Branson (Iced Tea Supplier), as well as our incredible vendors and the hundreds of hungry townspeople who came downtown to enjoy a fantastic meal along with amazing live entertainment on stage.”

BRAC BBQ FEST event Chairperson Darla Howe said, “We especially thank Branson Dental Center and Dr. Richard Tallon who not only participated as our main event sponsor, but also provided the converted, antique firetruck that served up hundreds of plates of delicious pulled pork barbecue sandwiches, hamburgers and hotdogs. Their support of what the Arts Council is doing in our community goes above and beyond our expectations. The entire Branson Dental team were 100% behind this effort, and even assisted in the preparation and serving of the food to our patrons in attendance.”

Several local entertainers quickly offered their support of the Arts Council’s efforts to own and restore the Owen Theatre. “These are some of the nicest performers in our community,” said Jim Barber, “and because they graciously shared their amazing talents, we were able to offer free admission to the public, so everyone could enjoy the live music and comedy.”

Exciting performances throughout the day were provided by: Java Jived (acapella group from St. Louis), Branson Comedy Company (improv), Forte Theatre Productions (broadway cabaret music), BRAC Youth Troupe (solos and vocal selections from upcoming productions), Dylan Pratt (vocalist), Micheal Horn (guitar and vocalist), Joey Heard (songwriter and vocalist), Gary Dooms (Saxophone),  Robert Morris (Balloon Twister), and Rick McEwen (guitar and vocalist).

Jim Barber & Melonie Brown Enjoying The Day

In addition to all the vendor booths and entertainment offerings, the Branson Parks and Recreation Department provided a huge Bounce House for the kids to enjoy. Face painting was led by Melonie Brown with assistance from Roz Slavik and Kristen Ables. To top it off, a special bake goods tent provided tasty treats under the direction of Viola Beyer.

Mercy Hospital hosted the First Aid Booth, and even offered complimentary sunscreen to anyone who needed it. Dozens of BRAC volunteers joined the effort to assist with donation collection, food serving, event set-up and tear-down, and also promotional distribution of posters, flyers and signage all over the Branson area.

The Arts Council extends their sincere appreciation to the City of Branson, Branson Parks & Recreation, the DBBA, and everyone who assisted in this fundraising effort, and they organization looks forward to an even bigger BRAC BBQ FEST event in 2020.

Shrek the Musical Jr Features 71 Talented Young Actors!

Excitement is high as the Branson Regional Arts Council’s 2019 Summer Youth Institute production of Shrek the Musical Jr. opens for 6 hilarious performances at the Historic Owen Theatre.

Performances run June 6-9 at the Historic Owen Theatre in Downtown Branson. Advance reserved tickets are recommended and available online at BransonArts.org/tix or by calling the box office at 417-336-4255. Adult (18+) tickets are $16.95, and Youth (4-17) are $11.45.

“Enrollments for this summer’s Institute were through the roof, so we recruited additional teaching and directing staff to make this our BIGGEST and BEST Youth Troupe production yet,” said BRAC Executive Director Jim Barber.

71 students are enrolled for this production. In order to allow this many students to participate while presenting the best performance possible, the producers and directors decided to divide them into two separate casts, the Hansel Cast and the Gretel Cast. Each cast will perform 3 shows, and the individual cast members are all listed below.

My favorite song is called Make A Move, because the characters all start to bond after quarreling up until that point.  They discover their similarities and it becomes a very good moment!
