New Artwork To Be Unveiled This Sunday At Branson Convention Center Reception

The Branson Regional Arts Council invites the general public to attend the 2023 Spring New Artist Reception at the Branson Convention Center Art Gallery on the 2nd Level Concourse in Downtown Branson.

This FREE Community Event will be held THIS Sunday, March 12th from 6-8pm.  Everyone is welcome! You do NOT have to be a BRAC member to attend!

Please join us for an evening of incredible artistry, as we introduce several new works of art as well as a few new artists joining the Art Gallery Exhibition. Delicious hors d’oeuvres and a cash-bar will be available, courtesy of the Branson Convention Center.

The fourteen artists selected for this six-month exhibition include: Mary Arneson, Meike Aton, Diana Bogardus, Jennifer Buttell, Jack Clutter, Lee Copen, Megan Ellison, Venetta Harville, Brent Holland, Jasmine Hutton, Vic Mastis, Audrey Bottrell Parks, Gary Parks, and Whitney Weibel. Their creative works will be on display and available for purchase through mid-September 2023.

The Branson Convention Center Art Gallery has been visited in past years by approximately 100,000 people annually. Several of the featured artists will be attending the reception to discuss their work, and members of the Branson Regional Arts Council Board will be there to answer any questions.

BRAC Conservatory Acting and Musical Theatre Voice Classes Begin March 20th

The Branson Regional Arts Council is excited to announce registration for a new six-week series of Acting and Musical Theatre Voice Classes as part of the BRAC Conservatory of the Arts Program at the Historic Owen Theatre. These weekly classes beginning March 20, 2023 are designed for students between the ages of 7 – 18 years old. Our highly trained, professional instructors will provide students with a fun, safe and entertaining educational experience they will never forget!

In six exciting and activity centered workshops, students will learn through the power of play the fundamentals of acting and storytelling for the stage. In addition to training in movement and voice for the actor, students will experience growth by coming together as an ensemble to bring the “drama!” With a focus on theatrical acting each session will consist of activities tailored to each age group in order to equip your student with the foundations of what it means to be present, to listen well, and to act!

BRAC Conservatory – Josh Boulden

Josh Boulden is a professional actor, acting coach, and fight choreographer from Annapolis, MD. He trained at the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy for Classical Acting at The George Washington University in D.C., and before that at the Sight & Sound Theatre’s Performing Arts Conservatory in Lancaster, PA.

He’s been in the industry for over 10 years and is blessed to be in his sixth season as an actor at Sight & Sound Theatres in Branson. Before that he spent some time acting and teaching for the Annapolis Shakespeare Company, and currently teaches and directs for the Institute for Cultural Communicators.

You may have seen him in a past Branson Regional Arts Council production such as Blithe Spirit, The Glass Menagerie, and all of the Shakespeare in the Parks, and you will currently see him serving in the roles of board member and director for this fall’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Musical Theatre Voice Class Instructor – Kristin Jewell Cartwright

BRAC Conservatory – Kristin Cartwright

Kristin Jewell Cartwright is a Florida girl at heart, Kristin relocated back to Branson with her husband Tom and kids in January 2022. Besides the winter weather, living in the midwest has begun to feel like home again.

Helping vocalists achieve their goals has been Kristin’s passion for over 20 years, teaching both on the collegiate level and in her private studio. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Master’s degree in Vocal Performance. Kristin is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). She additionally has level 3 certification in Somatic Voicework, a functional method of vocal pedagogy created by Jeannette LoVetri, which approaches not just the vocal mechanism but the entire body as the instrument.

Kristin has performed in the community and professionally in both Florida and Missouri and most recently appeared in her BRAC debut as “Miss Andrew” in Mary Poppins. She is currently an adjunct professor of voice at College of the Ozarks and is excited about becoming more involved in the Branson arts community.

The Branson Regional Arts Council presents a special post-Valentine’s themed event at the Historic Owen Theatre in downtown Branson on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at 7:00pm.

Sonnets & Chocolates will be hosted by BRAC’s new Theatre and Special Events Manager Kyle Blanchard, and will allow attending guests to share an evening of sultry sonnets and enjoy the “sweet” romance of delicious chocolates and fine *wine!

“It’s not just for couples, singles are welcome to mingle!” – Kyle Blanchard (host)

The evening includes the live piano jazz of BRAC Vocal Instructor Roger Bergford, romantic poetry and sweets! Also expect fun trivia, games, and exciting door-prizes to be won!

If that wasn’t enough, there will also be an open mic for poets and hopeless romantics!

EVERYONE IS WELCOME and a $5 suggested donation per person will be accepted at the box office.

Twist All Night With Free Movie Starring June Wilkinson At Historic Owen Theatre

The Branson Regional Arts Council invites all fans of groovy dance moves and jazzy swing music to enjoy a free movie night at the Historic Owen Theatre on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at 2pm.

Twist All Night (1961), starring Louis Prima and June Wilkinson, tells the story of a group of struggling musicians who are very concerned they will be evicted from their nightclub. Musician Louis Evans (Louis Prima) and girlfriend Jenny Watson (June Wilkinson) accidentally encounter a group of art thieves.

Branson area musicians will LOVE the amazing music and area dancers will LOVE to dance along as the on screen performers twist the night away! Watch the Movie Trailer below!

Meet the stars of the film…

June Wilkinson was born in 1940 in Eastborne, England. She started performing at the young age of twelve, and become the youngest dancer at the age of fifteen at the Windmill Theatre in London. After coming to the United States, her career led her to become the world’s most-photographed woman of the late 50’s and 60’s, being featured in over fifty magazines and newspapers from 1958 to 1970. She appeared in several films and had television roles in such series as 77 Sunset Strip, Batman, The Doris Day Show and The ABC Comedy Hour.

Louis Leo Prima (December 7, 1910 – August 24, 1978) was an American singer, songwriter, bandleader, and trumpeter. While rooted in New Orleans jazz, swing music, and jump blues, Prima touched on various genres throughout his career: he formed a seven-piece New Orleans-style jazz band in the late 1920s, fronted a swing combo in the 1930s and a big band group in the 1940s, helped to popularize jump blues in the late 1940s and early to mid 1950s, and performed frequently as a Vegas lounge act beginning in the 1950s. Prima is also known for providing the voice for the orangutan King Louie in the 1967 Disney film The Jungle Book.

The Branson Regional Arts Council presents the Noël Coward classic, Blithe Spirit, a hilarious Halloween weekend production!

The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages, this much-revived classic from the playwright of Private Lives offers up fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine (played by Josh Boulden), re-married but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira (played by Charis Boulden) who is called up by a visiting “happy medium,” one Madame Arcati (played by Jennifer Buttel).  Jennifer’s over the top, eccentric character is a role made famous by the late Angela Lansbury in both London’s West End, Broadway and national tour productions.

The Branson Regional Arts Council invites the general public to attend the 2022 Annual Member Meeting and New Artist Reception at the Branson Convention Center Art Gallery on the 2nd Level Concourse in Downtown Branson.

Osage Ballet Seeks Branson Actors For Televised Concert At Mansion Theatre

Wahzhazhe is a contemporary ballet that mesmerizes audiences from the first beat of the rhythmic drums to the final curtain close. Audiences are surprised by the powerful storytelling, and even those who are not ballet lovers return to the show repeatedly to be moved by the story that unfolds in front of them.

On August 5th and 6th, the Osage Ballet will be performing at The Mansion Theatre for the Performing Arts in Branson, MO and the ballet is immediately seeking three actors to participate in this production.

Here are the details:

  • Two military guys to bring in the treaties. They will need to move well, but not necessarily dance.
  • One bad guy who was in his 40’s, short, medium build, light complexion. Needs to be able to move well.
  • Rehearsals begin August 3rd at The Mansion Theater. Shows are August 5 and 6.

This is a non-paid performance, however the production will be recorded for a television special and the performers will have an excellent credit with high exposure nationally. The Branson Regional Arts Council is not associated with this production and is providing this audition information as a public service to assist this exciting concert event coming to Branson.

Since its humble beginnings, Wahzhazhe has garnered national and international attention. In 2013, the ballet was invited to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC to perform. In September of 2015, the Festival of Families in Philadelphia gave Wahzhazhe a global stage with more than half a million people in attendance during the Papal visit of Pope Francis.

Wahzhazhe touches audiences in a way that even they cannot anticipate. At sold-out performances in Washington DC’s Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, even grown men wept. An audience member who watched the performance at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in 2013 lauded that although she did not usually enjoy ballet, she would watch this ballet every time it was performed. At a performance at the Coleman Theatre in 2014, a woman embraced a young dancer after the show and explained through tears that she had no words for the depth of emotion that she felt after watching the ballet.

While the Osage Ballet, Wahzhazhe is a professional production, it is also a non-profit production that requires financial support from generous donors for its success.

See 10 Exciting Plays That Are Each 10 Minutes in Length on July 10th!

The Branson Regional Arts Council presents the first annual 10-Minute Play Series at the Historic Owen Theatre this Sunday, July 10th at 7pm. The 10-10-10 will encourage local writers and directors of all skill and experience levels to practice their art in a low-stakes, low-commitment, safe environment.

The evening will consist of ten plays lasting no longer than 10 minutes each, with a variety of styles presented. Plays include a contemporary comedy and drama, a fantasy, a surrealist piece, a silent film-style play, 2 classical plays—one being a George Bernard Shaw excerpt and the other, a play written by Benjamin Franklin, and more.

Kyle Blanchard is the inspiration behind this new event, and is also participating as one of the directors.

“This year, the directors and plays were chosen ahead-of-time from locals that displayed interest, but in the future anyone will be able to submit their play and/or submit to direct.

Writers and Directors will be chosen on a first-come basis with no regard to experience!”

Admission is free, but a $10 donation at the door would be appreciated to benefit BRAC’s Arts Education Program providing training and arts opportunities in theatre, music, vocal, dance, technical production and the visual arts for area residents of all ages.

Seating is limited, so come when the doors open at 6:30 to ensure you have a seat!

There will be a ten-minute intermission and concessions will be available for purchase. A Talkback session will follow the play presentations for audience reaction and questions.

All plays are rated PG or PG-13. There is some mild adult language and violence.

Branson Convention Center New Artist Reception Friday April 29th

The Branson Regional Arts Council invites the public to attend a FREE Community Arts Event on Friday, April 29, 2022 from 6-8pm at the Branson Convention Center Art Gallery on the 2nd level concourse.

Join in celebration of 14 area artists, featuring all new works now on display at the gallery. Featured artists include: Meike Aton, Diana Bogardus, Audrey Bottrell-Parks, Lana Braden, Lee Copen, Jessica Gambino, Dee Giles, Brent Holland, Lynnette Horn, Jenny Mayor, Gayle Page, Gary Parks, Terena Terry and Norma Wiedmeyer.

This will be an evening of incredible artistry, as we introduce several new artists joining the Art Gallery Exhibition. Several of the featured artists will be attending the reception to discuss their work, and members of the Branson Regional Arts Council Board will be there to answer any questions.

Godspell Musical Opens March 31 At Historic Owen Theatre

The Branson Regional Arts Council proudly presents the immensely successful rock opera, Godspell, at the Historic Owen Theatre from March 31 – April 10, 2022. Performances are at 7:00 pm with 2:00 pm Matinees on Sundays. This promises to be an inspiring and entertaining production for all ages!

Based on the Gospel according to St Matthew, Godspell is the story of a small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life.

Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden); and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day by Day,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs, including “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All for the Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.”

HISTORIC OWEN THEATRE TICKETS

The BRAC production is directed by Jeremiah Reeve with musical director Kyle Denton. Choreography is provided by Jacob Deck.

The cast features Christian Ross (Jesus) and Alex Harris (Judas), along with Heather Stolfa, Haley Moore-Haskin, Sonya Godfrey, Claire Denton, Jacob Deck, Kayleigh Dominish, Katy Kohler, Loran Polson, Abby Reeve and Taryn Huffman.

The production team also includes Karie Dykeman and Kim Hale (Producers), Pamela Meadows (Lighting Director), Mac Hill (Technical Director), Cole Hill (Sound Technician), Jeremiah Reeve (Set Design), Lisa Murphy (Media Coordinator), Lorie Best (Volunteer Coordinator), Josh Silvy (Theatre Operations), Marshall Meadows (Photography), and Jim Barber (BRAC Executive Director, Marketing and Design).
