Paul Haygood brings his imaginative Storytelling Workshop and Performance to the Historic Owen Theatre this Saturday, February 10, 2018. (UPDATE: This event is postponed due to bad weather, rescheduled date TBA)

BRAC Executive Director Jim Barber welcomes Paul Haygood

Storytelling is one of the earliest artforms, stimulating the creative imagination and building a sense of community between the teller and listeners. It fosters an appreciation for one’s own culture and history, while at the same time, allowing us to learn about other peoples and places.

Paul Haygood is a master storyteller. His stories are well-researched and engaging.” – Joshua Heston, StateOfTheOzarks

Each of us has a story in the making, and the 2pm afternoon workshop will help your own stories come to life. Participants will have fun learning story preparation, picture thinking, and the difference between acting and storytelling. Finding the raw material of a story, listening as a skill, dramatic facial expression and body language will also be included.

The 7pm evening concert performance will include a variety of engaging stories, skillfully presented by Mr. Haygood. These may include: “The Water of Life,” from Grimm’s Fairy Tales; “Iduna and the Golden Apples,” from the Norse tradition (Thor, Loki, etc); and “The Boatman and the Bear,” improbable adventures with a paddle-wheeler, a bear and a catfish, on a flatboat between St. Louis and New Orleans.

Paul Haygood was born and raised in the nature and story-rich Islands of Hawaii, and has shared his stories around the world, from New Zealand to New York. He is related to the famous Haygood family of entertainers, so you know that he is a creative performer at heart.

We are thrilled to present his inventive and entertaining storytelling right here at the Historic Owen Theatre in Branson.

On Tuesday, January 30, 2018, nearly 800 young students from several Branson area schools attended a live music concert with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra as part of an annual Young People’s Concert program that the Branson Regional Arts Council has coordinated on behalf of our area youth.

The concert is provided free of charge to our area schools and is specifically designed to be an in-depth learning experience.  This year’s concert featured guest soloist Richard Todd Payne who combined his commanding and dramatic Baritone voice with the symphony to present a series of Black American masterpieces, including a moving rendition of Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech.  A native of Memphis Tennessee, and Assistant Professor of Voice at Missouri State University, Mr. Payne’s voice has been described as “Magnificent”,  “Impassioned”, and “Stentorian”.  He is sought after nationally for his commanding presence and ringing tones in both Opera and Oratorio.

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. Branson schools appreciate all you have done. – Sarah Ver Steegt Kirk

Each year, the Young People’s Concerts have educated approximately 4,000 fourth grade children from the Springfield and Branson area school districts, and students from private, parochial and home schools, to listen to live symphonic music and gain valuable exposure to the elements of musical styles and eras.

My students have been learning about the 1960’s and the Civil Rights Movement.  We had listened to Dr. King’s speech a few weeks ago. The LOVED to hear it set to music and to hear some of the stories behind the pieces chosen. Thank you so much Branson Regional Arts Council for this opportunity for our students!!! – Kellsey Howerton Bradley

On the day of the performance, the children arrived at the Hughes Brothers Theatre on the the famous Branson Strip by school busses, seated together by classes with their teachers, and treated to an enriching cultural experience. The music was interspersed with entertaining facts about each composition. Musical instrumentation was explained, as were the differences in musical styles.

Following each performance, the teachers follow up with each class attending in discussing important elements of the musical experience so as to integrate the concert experience into the students’ curriculum.

Major sponsors of this year’s concert were the Branson Regional Arts Council, the Titanic Museum Attraction, the Tri-Lakes Board of Realtors, the Missouri Arts Council, and a handful of individual donors including Mary Kellogg, Jim Barber, Pam Davis, Craig Burnett, Leah Horn, Patty Tweedle, and Jeff Turner. This year’s event wouldn’t have been possible without their generous assistance.

THE FOLLOWING MAJOR SPONSORS OF THIS EVENT APPRECIATE AND UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ARTS IN OUR COMMUNITY.  PLEASE THANK THEM FOR THEIR FINANCIAL INVESTMENT IN OUR AREA YOUTH!

Some of the 80+ actors who auditioned for Annie.

“The producers and directors would like to extend their sincere appreciation to each and every one of them”, said Executive Director Jim Barber.

“The final casting decisions were not easily reached as the talent level was very high, and there were many more people auditioning than available roles.

The Arts Council is excited, however, that we will have many more opportunities for everyone to audition for plays, musicals, or any of our theatre acting workshops that will be scheduled throughout the year”.

The Branson Regional Arts Council’s Theatre Advisory Committee oversees the selection of all plays and musicals throughout the performance season. Committee members include: Justin Ables, Kristen Ables, Tina Cool Anderson, Jean Cantwell, Kimberly Hale, Jim Barber, Lisa Murphy, Roz Slavik, Greg Slavik, Patty SlicerSue Head, Hayden Head, Darlene Graham, Michelle Inskeep, Delyla Uebel, and Rick Uebel.

Rehearsals for Annie begin this Sunday. The public is encouraged to purchase seats for the March 8-11 performances early as this production is expected to sell out.  Advance tickets are available now at BransonArts.org/tix.

Jim Barber, IOM of Branson Regional Arts Council Graduates from Institute for Organization Management

A Leadership Training Program Produced by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is pleased to announce that Jim Barber, IOM, Executive Director of the Branson Regional Arts Council, has graduated from the program and has received the recognition of IOM. Awarded to all graduates of the Institute program, the IOM Graduate Recognition signifies the individual’s completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management. In addition, participants can earn credit hours toward the Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) or Certified Association Executive (CAE) certifications. Nearly 1,000 individuals attend Institute annually.

“Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their industries and organizations,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management. “These individuals have the knowledge, skills, and dedication necessary to achieve professional and organizational success in the dynamic association and chamber industries.”

Since its commencement in 1921, the Institute program has been educating tens of thousands of association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders on how to build stronger organizations, better serve their members and become strong business advocates. Institute’s curriculum consists of four weeklong sessions at five different university locations throughout the country. Through a combination of required courses and electives in areas such as leadership, advocacy, marketing, finance, and membership, Institute participants are able to enhance their own organizational management skills and add new fuel to their organizations, making them run more efficiently and effectively.

Institute for Organization Management is the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. It is the premier nonprofit professional development program for association and chamber professionals, fostering individual growth through interactive learning and networking opportunities.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USCCF) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce dedicated to strengthening America’s long-term competitiveness. We educate the public on the conditions necessary for business and communities to thrive, how business positively impacts communities, and emerging issues and creative solutions that will shape the future.
